JEAN BAPTISTE GRANCHER (1911-1974)

From the middle of France, a native of Aubusson in Creuse. Painted in Italy and Spain under the names of both JB Grancher and JB Granger (altered for contractual purposes). Granger’s father was a blacksmith, his mother made tapestries. Very much an artistic family. He exhibited in Paris at Salon Des Independents and Salon D’Autome as well as in the USA.

Granger painted portraits, landscapes, and still life. He was a friend of the art critic Maximilien Gauthier (1893-1977) who was instrumental in his early exhibitions, and who described him as a leading exponent of French Social Art. Plein-air post-impressionist landscape artist whose later work was often scenes along the Vienne Valley and rustic landscapes of the lower Massif Central.

The work comes with two of Granger’s exhibition catalogues – one of which includes a photograph of the artist. You can well attach these to the back of the artwork.
